An analysis of micro winds in Dubai

This project was instigated by a real-time mapping of the micro-wind patterns in Dubai, studied in comparison with the prevailing winds expected in the area. Identifying differences between micro and macro wind patterns, the study highlights the importance of quantifying and mapping the micro-wind flows, in view of proposing ways to capitalize on them as a resource that could potentially generate electricity through the use of piezoelectric systems.

Palm leaves as wind sensors

In its first phase the project made use of machine learning to map wind patterns in real-time by computing the movement of tree leaves. In the second phase of the project, trees were augmented through a piezoelectric system, turning them into active harvesters of electrical energy.

From sensors to harvesters
